Study Tips for Success

A coach works with the team every day. The coach wants success the night of the game. Only those players who practice every day or give their best effort make the team successful. A coach cannot do the work for the players. The players have to practice themselves. This is true in academic classes, too. Parents, you are your student’s best coach for academic success.Note that the first semester starts Aug 27 and ends January 16th. Plan for success.

 Study Tip #1

Have your student bring home all his or her books every night for all courses whether or not they say the homework is done.

What should your student study at night? Review the material that was taught that day in class. Review the notes your student took on the day’s work. They should take notes in every class.Review the homework from previous days. Do the homework that is due the next day or check it at this point if it has already been done. Review previous days’ work. Plan a head for the next quiz, test or project.

Study Tip # 2 How to Take Notes

It is important to take notes so you know the material covered in class.

Put your name, the subject and the date on the notes.

Copy down everything the teacher puts on the board or overhead.

Add notes to what you copied from the board.

Write down the topic and important facts from class discussions.

If a video is show, write down the title and main facts.

At the end of the period, write a two sentence summary of what you understood from the day’s class.

At the end of the period, write down any questions you have about what you did not understand.

Use these questions to ask the teacher or look up in your textbook.

When you study at home, take notes on what you read for class.

Write down any questions about material you don’t understand to ask the next day.

Keep all your notes together in your notebook.

Study Tips for Success: Study Tip # 3 Test Preparation Tips

Preparation for your first test should begin after the first day of class; this includes studying, completing homework assignments and reviewing study materials on a regular basis.

Budget your time, make sure you have sufficient time to study so that you are well prepared for the test.

Go to review, pay attention to hints that the instructor may give about the test. Take careful notes and ask questions about items you may be confused about.

Ask the instructor to specify the areas that will be emphasized on the test.

Make sure you go to the class right before the test; it's another prime time for the instructor to give out more hints or the format of the test.

Go over any material from practice tests, homework, sample problems, review material, the textbook, and class notes.

Eat before a test. Having food in your stomach will give you energy and help you focus, but avoid heavy foods which can make you groggy.

Don't try to pull an all nighter. Get at least 3 hours of sleep before the test.

Try this new idea: take one peppermint to eat just before the test.
